Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the American Red Cross and its tireless staff and dedicated volunteers for its remarkable work in the region and celebrates its new “Promise to Prepare” Initiative; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, April 26, 2008, to be “AMERICAN RED CROSS DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, when disaster strikes, both nationally and internationally, the American Red Cross immediately responds to help the victims in their time of need ; and,
WHEREAS, the American Red Cross continually strives to uphold its Fundamental Principles of Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary Service, Unity and Universality; and,
WHEREAS, in the previous fiscal year, the Southwestern Pennsylvania Chapter of the American Red Cross responded to 401 emergencies and provided assistance with such essential needs as food, clothing, and shelter to approximately 1900 individuals in our community; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to immediate disaster relief, this Red Cross Chapter trained more than 47,500 community members to save lives through CPR, First Aid Lifeguarding and AED courses last year ; and,
WHEREAS, 588 families in our community relied on our local Chapter to communicate emergency messages to their loved ones in the military through the Service to the Armed Forces Program, a 24 hour emergency counseling and support service; and,
WHEREAS, the Southwestern PA Chapter of the American Red Cross does not receive public funding nor does it receive operational funding from the national organization and therefore began The Red Tie Affair in 2003 as a way to raise funds for the local Red Cross, to celebrate the hard work of its volunteers and recognize a distinguished leader for his/her work in the community; and,
WHEREAS, the Red Cross's biggest annual fundraiser, THE RED TIE AFFAIR, will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2008, at the Westin Convention Center Hotel with Sally Wiggin as Master of Ceremonies and will honor Pittsburgh native, retired Supreme Court Chief Justice Ralph J. Cappy with the Distinguished Leadership Award for his significant judicial and higher education leadership and humanitarian contributions.
