Title: WHEREAS, Saint Basil Catholic Parish was established on February 14, 1907 by Pittsburgh Bishop Regis Canevin to care for the people and the needs of the growing Catholic community in Carrick; and WHEREAS, Saint Basil Parish is celebrating its 100th anniversary throughout this year, along with a special Centennial event on October 14, 2007; and WHEREAS, Saint Basil's first pastor, Reverend Charles Steppling, was appointed in February of 1907. As of January 1, 2004, Father James R. Torquato was installed as Saint Basil's current and sixth pastor; and WHEREAS, to accommodate the growing congregation, Father Steppling proceeded with the construction of the present church, which was dedicated by Bishop Hugh Boyle on October 7, 1923; and WHEREAS, Saint Basil Parish has provided a quality Catholic education in both its elementary school and its high school, with the generous service of the Sisters of Divine Providence, for thousands of students during the past century; and ...

WHEREAS, Saint Basil Parish is celebrating its 100th anniversary throughout this year, along with a special Centennial event on October 14, 2007; and

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the council of the City of Pittsburgh acknowledges Saint Basil Church and its dedication to its parishioners, the community and the entire City of Pittsburgh over the past 100 years.
AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare that Sunday, October 14, 2007 to be "Saint Basil Church's 100th Anniversary Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
