Title
WHEREAS the veterinary technician profession is a growing career with increasing potential for employment opportunities and professional development; and
WHEREAS veterinary technicians work as a team with veterinarians in order to diagnose diseases and injuries, prescribe treatments, and perform surgery on animals; and
WHEREAS veterinary technicians also perform many essential medical duties independently, such as placing IV's, collecting blood samples, performing laboratory testing, maintaining medical records, diagnostic imaging, administering and monitoring anesthesia, supervising recovery, animal dentistry, in addition to handling the smelly, dirty, and least glamorous tasks of veterinary medicine; and
WHEREAS veterinary technicians must possess an expert knowledge of mathematics, English, and science, as well as superior observation skills, creativity, flexibility, the ability to multitask during surgery, as well as physical strength and dexterity; and
WHEREAS veterinary technicians must also have excellent "people skills," as they seek to better educate the general public as to animal related issues, while also engaging with pet owners in the context of their day-to-day professional lives; and
WHEREAS veterinary technicians enjoy the opportunity to interact with and care for animals in intellectually challenging and stimulating environments; and
WHEREAS the Pittsburgh Vet Tech Institute not only provides classroom and experiential training in the skills necessary to earn an associate degree in veterinary technology or animal health, but it also provides job placement assistance to its graduating students; and
WHEREAS the Pittsburgh Vet Tech Institute's Veterinary Technician program has been approved by the American Veterinary Medical Association, a prestigious recommendation that is required in order for a student to graduate as a licensed veterinary technician.
