WHEREAS, on Tuesday, July 10, 2007 the Council of the City of Pittsburgh wishes to honor Joshua Smith on his award of a $1,000 Carson Scholars Fund Award to be used toward any college to further his education; and,
WHEREAS, Dr. Ben Carson from John Hopkins Hospital and University created the Carson Scholars Fund Award as a National Scholars Program for students who achieve academic excellence; and,
WHEREAS, Joshua Smith maintained High Honor Roll status throughout his freshman year at Vincentian Academy as an Award recipient, which has earned him the Carson Award for the second year in a row as he enters his Sophomore year; and,
WHEREAS, Joshua Smith also received the Mind, Heart and Spirit Award from Vincentian Academy, which is voted upon by faculty and peers, and is awarded to one male and one female student from grades 9-12, and this award is a great testament to his academic and personal accomplishments; and,
WHEREAS, in addition to school work, Joshua also participates on the Golf Team, and serves as a volunteer at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh hereby recognizes the outstanding academic achievements of Joshua Smith and congratulates him on receiving the Mind, Heart and Spirit Award and the Carson Scholars Fund Award.
