Title: WHEREAS, on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 the City wishes to honor Sam L. Baskins Jr. for his admirable service to the youth of our city; and, WHEREAS, Sam L. Baskins Jr. dedicated most of his adult life to coaching young boys and girls in athletics, first as T-ball players, progressing to Little Leaguers, and finally on to Pony League Players; and WHEREAS, Sam Baskins served as the Founder of the Dunbar Athletic Conference from 1968-1977. He worked with the Greater North Side Athletic Association's Football Program, served as the Founder of the GNAA's Baseball Program, and went on to become President and Commissioner of the Greater North Side Athletic Association from 1977-1995; and WHEREAS, Sam Baskins' passion for the game stemmed from his own life experiences, where he played semi pro baseball with the Pittsburgh Corsaiers and Homewood Brownies,; he played minor league ball with the Cincinnati Reds as a second baseman and catcher, and also played on several all star teams in So...

WHEREAS, on Tuesday, June 19, 2007 the City wishes to honor Sam L. Baskins Jr. for his admirable service to the youth of our city; and,

WHEREAS, Sam L. Baskins Jr. dedicated most of his adult life to coaching young boys and girls in athletics, first as T-ball players, progressing to Little Leaguers, and finally on to Pony League Players; and

WHEREAS, Sam Baskins served as the Founder of the Dunbar Athletic Conference from 1968-1977. He worked with the Greater North Side Athletic Association's Football Program, served as the Founder of the GNAA's Baseball Program, and went on to become President and Commissioner of the Greater North Side Athletic Association from 1977-1995; and

WHEREAS, Sam Baskins' passion for the game stemmed from his own life experiences, where he played semi pro baseball with the Pittsburgh Corsaiers and Homewood Brownies,; he played minor league ball with the Cincinnati Reds as a second baseman and catcher, and also played on several all star teams in South Florida and Georgia; and

WHEREAS, one of Sam's greatest sources of pride was founding the "Handicap League," which was eventually re-previously named the "Challenger League" as a tribute to the memory of those who died in the Challenger Tragedy. Sam's compassion for children with disabilities was deeply captivated by all who participated in with the program, which included many young volunteers from his little league teams; and,

WHEREAS, Sam L. Baskins Jr., a six year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, shared his life experiences and knowledge with children and unselfishly dedicated time, guidance and leadership, and through his commitment has had a positive impact on the lives of hundreds of young people.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Mr. Baskins for his commitment to our youth, both on and off the field, and hereby proclaims Tuesday, June 19, 2007 as "Sam L. Baskins Jr. Day" in the City of Pittsburgh in recogni...
