WHEREAS, Mabel Meyer, a life long resident of the South Side, is the proprietor of Mabel Meyer's Confectionary, South Side's old fashioned candy store located on Breed Street; and
WHEREAS, for 57 years, Mabel has sold candies, sweets, chips, popcorn, pretzels, pickles, soda pop, ice cream, ice tea, milk and juice to the local neighborhood children who frequent her store; and
WHEREAS, Mabel met her husband Hubert Meyer in the early 1940's and on March 9, 1944 they were married. She and her husband acquired the candy store in 1948 from his aunt. At that time the store was located next to the Breed Street Terminus of the Monongahela Incline; and
WHEREAS, as her husband worked in the State Store on 17th Street, Mabel raised her son and daughter while maintaining the candy store; and
WHEREAS, for over 5 decades, Mabel has watched the neighborhood children grow into adults and now she is serving their children and their grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, when asked what is the most rewarding experience in business, she stated that "I have had such a good life, full of health and many friendships."

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends and congratulates Mabel Meyer for 57 years of success business and for her care and love of our children.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that today, December 19, 2005, be hereby declared "Mabel Meyer Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
