WHEREAS, Viktor A. Yushchenko was born on February 23, 1954 in the village of Khoruzhivka, Sumy Oblast, Ukraine to parents Andriy and Vavara Yushchenko; and
WHEREAS, Viktor graduated from the Ternopil Finance and Economics Institute in 1975 and obtained his graduate degree in 1984 in Finance from the Ukrainian Institute of Economics and Agricultural Management; and
WHEREAS, from 1984 to 1999, he enjoyed a rising professional career at the larger and more important banks in Ukraine and was also instrumental in strengthening the Hryvinia, Ukraine currency; and
WHEREAS, in 1999-2001, he became the leader of the political coalition, Our Ukraine, and was elected a People's Deputy to the Verkhovna Rada parliament; and
WHEREAS, in 2002, he announced his candidacy for the office of President of Ukraine and was elected President in December 2004, after a controversial campaign that saw the birth of the Orange Revolution by the people of Ukraine against the use of dirty political tricks; and
WHEREAS, on Saturday, November 26, 2005, the Ukrainian Technological Society of Pittsburgh presents its Ukrainian of the Year Award to President Viktor A. Yushchenko in recognition of his life-long advocacy of democracy and human rights in Ukraine at the Society's 36th annual Dinner Dance at the Pittsburgh Athletic Association.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh welcomes the recognition of one of the most important political leaders in Ukraine, extends our warm friendship to him and sends him Best Wishes in leading Ukraine into the Community of Nations.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that Saturday, November 26, 2005 be hereby declared "Viktor Yushchenko Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.
