Title: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh salutes Oakland Planning and Development Corporation for initiating and continuing the Oakland Dumpster Project. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes the Project Supporters/Contributors for their commitment to a cleaner Oakland and commends the Project Partners, especially Waste Management and The City of Pittsburgh Departments of Public Works and Environmental Services, for their hard work, cooperation and dedication to making the 2005 Oakland Dumpster Project a success.

Whereas, the arrival and departure of students from the Oakland campuses generates massive amounts of trash and debris in the Oakland neighborhood; and

Whereas, in 2003, Oakland Planning and Development Corporation instituted the Oakland Dumpster Project which places dumpsters at key locations to mitigate trash and debris issues; and,

Whereas, beginning the morning of Monday, August 15th, 2005 dumpsters were delivered to seven locations throughout Oakland where they remained through August 17th. The dumpsters were again placed at the same seven locations on Friday, August 19th and removed Monday, August 22nd; and,

Whereas, this year, a total of 60.3 tons of trash, furniture and debris was collected. Waste Management collected 40.3 tons in their dumpsters and the City's Department of Environmental Services collected an additional 20+ tons piled around the dumpsters and with extra bulk collections that week. In addition, the City of Pittsburgh Recycling Division collected cardboard from discarded boxes generated by the students. This means that the Oakland Dumpster Project has removed a grand total of 147 tons of trash, unwanted furniture and debris since the program began in 2003; and,

Whereas, for 2005, the Oakland Dumpster Project Supporter/Contributors consisted of Council President Gene Ricciardi, the University of Pittsburgh, Carlow University, Northwest Savings Bank, Eureka Bank, McKnight Development Corporation, MJ Kelly Realty Corporation, John C. R. Kelly Realty, John Basile, Harold Perlick, Patrick Altdorfer, Martin Kline, Kenneth Eckenrode, Robert Eckenrode and Walnut Capital Management. The 2005 Project Partners consisted of the University of Pittsburgh Arrival Survival Team and Department of Parking and Transportation Services, Waste Management, the City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, the City of Pittsburgh Police Department, Oakland Community Council ...
