WHEREAS, The grand opening of the Spring Garden Valley Shop 'n Save took place on Friday, September 30, 2005; and
WHEREAS, The opening of the Shop 'n Save was made possible through the combined effort of Neighborhood Enterprises, Inner City Grocers, the Fresh Food Financing Initiative, the Reinvestment Fund, the Food Trust, The Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition, the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh and Dollar Bank; and
WHEREAS, Inner City Grocers, a social enterprise subsidiary of The Spring Garden Neighborhood Enterprises is the first Pittsburgh grocery store to receive funds from the Fresh Food Financing Initiative, amounting to $200,000, which was given by the state to combat the unequal distribution of supermarkets amongst the area; and
WHEREAS, The Spring Garden Valley Shop 'n Save along with five other businesses operated by Neighborhood Enterprises return their profit to the Spring Garden Community Council which uses it to improve the community; and
WHEREAS, Shop 'n Save proudly sells locally made products such as Breadworks bread, Reinholds ice cream and Sabio Springs water; and
WHEREAS, The Spring Garden Valley Shop 'n Save is located conveniently located on the bus line, making it accessible for many area residents who rely on public transportation; and
WHEREAS, Shop 'n Save has not only stimulated the neighborhood's economy by providing employment to local individuals, but has provided fresh produce and meats to the North Side which was previously served by only two small grocery stores,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends all of the individuals, organizations and businesses whose combined effort helped to open the Spring Garden Valley Shop 'n Save.
