Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh acknowledges the Emmaus Community of Pittsburgh for their hard work and dedication put forth towards those with mental disabilities. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby proclaim Tuesday, October 18, 2005 as "The Emmaus Community of Pittsburgh Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Emmaus Community of Pittsburgh was started in 1990 by Lorraine and Ken Wagner as a non-profit Catholic organization to provide residential living for adults with mental disabilities; and
 
WHEREAS, since then, the Emmaus house on the South Side, the Bethany House in Brookline, and the Tabor House in Troy Hill have all served as group homes for residents with mental retardation; and
 
WHEREAS, each of these group homes houses four to five residents with either permanent live-in couples or a rotating staff; and
 
WHEREAS, Each of these homes are set up using a "family model" in order to run the household in which meals, leisure, and chores are shared by everyone; and
 
WHEREAS, the Emmaus Community of Pittsburgh gives an outstanding level of commitment to each and every resident in the organization's care; and
 
WHEREAS, by providing quality care in a family oriented atmosphere, the Emmaus House has made a difference in the lives of many people with mental disabilities throughout the region;
