Whereas, October 8th, 2005, the YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh held their 6th annual Pink Ribbon Luncheon and fashion show at Marriott City, an event that is dedicated to raising Breast Cancer Awareness in the Pittsburgh region. There were over 450 women who attended; and
Whereas, on average, 33 women are diagnosed with and 6 die of breast cancer daily in Pennsylvania, making it the leading killer in the state among women between the ages of 35 and 54; and
Whereas, the most important factor in successfully treating breast cancer is early detection. Knowing this, the ENCOREplus Program, under the leadership of Yvonne Durham of the YWCA, actively promotes early detection education; and
Whereas, the ENCOREplus Program it sees that there are inequalities in access to healthcare for many women and in response works to remove the barriers by providing referrals to clinical services, support systems and promoting effective community outreach.
Whereas, the ENCOREplus Program is funded by the AVON Foundation Breast Care Fund and provides outreach and education in breast and cervical health, with a focus on reaching medically underserved women including the low-income, minorities, the elderly and the under-insured

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the YWCA of Greater Pittsburgh ENCOREplus Program and its work in assisting women in their fight against breast cancer and enthusiastically endorses the Pink Ribbon Luncheon and fashion show.
