Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh extends its thanks and appreciation to the Sons of Columbus of America for its many years of service to the City and extends its best wishes and congratulations as it celebrates 80 years as a fraternal organization. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh proclaims Sunday, October 9, 2005 as “Sons of Columbus Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on April 9, 1925, three independent organizations: the Italian Workman's Society, Royal Marine Society and the Victor Emanuel Society, merged and consolidated their existing charters into one corporation, the Sons of Columbus of America; and

WHEREAS, the Sons of Columbus of America, Inc., is dedicated to promoting the ideals and qualities as exemplified by the renowned explorer and discoverer of America, Christopher Columbus, and to encourage civic leadership; and

WHEREAS, in 1958, the Sons of Columbus erected the Christopher Columbus Monument in Schenley Park, which was later restored under their leadership and organization in commemoration of the 1992 Quincentennial Celebration honoring the 500th Anniversary of the Discovery of America; and

WHEREAS, the Sons of Columbus of America have established a superior record of public service; and

WHEREAS, On Sunday, October 9, 2005 in collaboration with the Bloomfield Preservation and Heritage Society, the Sons of Columbus of America, Inc. is celebrating its 80th Anniversary with a Mass at the Parish of the Immaculate Conception & St. Joseph in Bloomfield at 11:30 a.m., and

WHEREAS, the Sons of Columbus will hold its 80th Anniversary Banquet “Saluting our Past, Honoring our Present, Reaching Toward our Future” on October 9, 2005 at Churchill Valley Country Club, highlighted by the reunion of the ten Miss Bella Italias and the recognition of Dorothy Ardolino Restivo, the daughter of the first National President of the Sons of Columbus of America.
