Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh joins the community in recognizing Women Against Abusive Relationship for their critical and continued service to the community, but most importantly, for helping women and girls learn that “Love Does Not Hurt.”

Whereas, Nearly 5.3 million women in America 18 and older are physically or emotionally battered, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Of that number, 1.2 million are left injured and 1,300 die.
 
Whereas, Women Against Abusive Relationships (WAAR) is an awareness, education and prevention program for teens and female adults working to combat these horrific statistics. Its mission is to Break the Cycle of violence in intimate partner relationships; and
 
Whereas, To accomplish their goal, WAAR teaches participants how to identify the signs of abusive behavior.  In addition, WAAR offers empowerment activities to females through their Healing Space in an effort to help them make informed choices necessary for healthy relationships and self-sufficiency; and
 
Whereas, The Healing Space is a place for females who are hurting or have been hurt, due to being victimized in intimate partnerships via domestic/dating violence, rape, sexual assault, incest or stalking; and
 
Whereas, Furthering their efforts to accomplish their mission, Women Against Abusive Relationships will host their Intimate Partner Violence conference on Saturday, October 1, 2005.  Intimate Partner Violence addresses actual or threatened physical or sexual violence or psychological and emotional abuse directed toward a spouse, ex-spouse, current or former boyfriend or girlfriend, or current or former dating partner; and
 
Whereas, Woman Against Abusive Relationships are supported by Mt. Ararat Community Tithe Ministry, Magee-Women's Hospital of UPMC and Universal Sisters.
