WHEREAS, in 1892, Bishop Richard Phelan of the Pittsburgh Diocese, gave the residents in the Knoxville area permission to build a church and school. The presence of this English-speaking church was incentive to the Irish Catholics of the South Side to move into the Hilltop; and
WHEREAS, the Church was named in honor of the Irish Saint, Saint Canice. In 1894, the growing congregation urged the construction of a larger and newer building, which was completed two years later in 1896; and
WHEREAS, St. Canice has a rich history of caring for over 113 years. The priests and nuns have shepherded and guided many thousands of young people through their elementary and high school years; and
WHEREAS, in 1994, St. Canice, St. Henry, St. Joseph, and St. George, the four Roman Catholic Churches located in the Hilltop Neighborhoods, merged to become St. John Vianney Parish; and
WHEREAS, St. Canice Alumni Association was established in 1989. For over fifteen years, the alumni has been a strong support for the merged parish and continues to be an active part of the congregation; and
WHEREAS, the Alumni has contributed very generously to St. Canice Church. Multiple renovations were provided for the church, the church's sound system, and to the Church basement as well as rebuilding the antique organ for the St. Joseph nuns. Many hand-painted Celtic vestments and altar linens for the church were donated and as of 2005, a total of $87,000 in tuition grants were awarded to student parishioners attending Catholic elementary and high schools; and
WHEREAS, on August 21, 2005, St. Canice Church, the "Irish" church, celebrates its final mass with a host of parishioners, family, friends, and alumni to celebrate the memories and say good bye.
