WHEREAS, the West Pittsburgh Partnership, which began in 1985 as the West End-Elliott Joint Project, a non profit 501(c)(3) community development corporation dedicated to strengthening and revitalizing the west end of the City of Pittsburgh, is celebrating its 20th Anniversary; and
WHEREAS, to celebrate this momentous occasion, on Friday, August 12, 2005 the West Pittsburgh Partnership is hosting a " First Lights Gala"; and
WHEREAS, along with the 20th Anniversary of the organization, "First Lights Gala" will showcase the completion of the public space improvements to South Main Street in the West End Neighborhood of the City of Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, South Main Street's facelift, consisting of new sidewalks, decorative street lighting and landscaping, represents a public/private accomplishment managed by the West Pittsburgh Partnership, the City of Pittsburgh's Urban Redevelopment Authority Main Streets Pittsburgh program, the Department of Community and Economic Development and local property owners who pledged 1/3 of the total project cost; and
WHEREAS, the First Lights Gala festivities will kick off at 6 P.M. with a special performance by the Pittsburgh Musical Theater's Good Vibrations, and the smooth jazz of Kenny Blake, at 9 PM there will be presentations by local dignitaries and the throwing of the switch that will be the first lighting of South Main Street's sixty new trees.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh congratulates the West Pittsburgh Partnership on their 20 years of dedication and service to the western neighborhoods of the City of Pittsburgh and commends all involved in making the South Main Street facelift a reality.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that Friday, August 12, 2005, be declared "FIRST LIGHTS GALA DAY" In the West End.
