Title: NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh commends Slovak Catholic Sokol for their work and dedication for the benefit all fraternal members and their families, congratulates Slovak Catholic Sokol on its 100th Anniversary and congratulates all the athletes as they performed their best at Slovak Catholic Sokol's 42nd International Slet. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that July 19-24th, 2005 be hereby declared "Slovak Catholic Sokol's 42nd International Slet days" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, on July 4, 1905, a young group of Slovak immigrants gathered to organize an athletic fraternity for Catholics called Slovak Catholic Sokol (SCS). SCS provides a variety of insurance plans for every member of the family, coupled with extensive gymnastic and athletic programs.  SCS membership has flourish from the first 46 founders to a great family of more than 32,000 members; and
 
WHEREAS, on July 4, 2005, Slovak Catholic Sokol celebrated its 100th Anniversary; and
 
WHEREAS, SCS awards 30 scholarship grants of $1,000 to college-bound members and various $500 scholarship grants to qualified members who attend Catholic High Schools as well as $250 grants to those attending Catholic grammar schools.  To date, some 1,225 members have received a total of $908,750 in funding; and
 
WHEREAS, SCS hosts annual bowling, golf, basketball, volleyball and softball tournaments which draw thousands of members annually.  Also, the biennial International gymnastic, track and field meet or "Slet", as it is known in Slovak, is held every two years in various American or Canadian cities where young people from ages 8 and older participate; and
 
WHEREAS, this year, Slovak Catholic Sokol successfully held their 42nd International Slet July 19-24, 2005 at Carnegie Mellon University.
