Title
Resolution that the Mayor is strongly urged to provide the data needed by Mellon Human Resources and Investor Solutions to complete its survey to determine options for health benefit programs.
Body
WHEREAS, one reason individuals may choose a lower paying job in the public sector over a higher paying job in the private sector is the often superior benefits package in the public sector; and
WHEREAS, the medical insurance benefit being offered to City of Pittsburgh employees in the year 2005 is inferior to that of any other known public sector employees; and
WHEREAS, the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities, which includes the City of Pittsburgh as a member, is exploring combining the members of the following organizations for better health insurance purchasing power:
1. The Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities;
2. The Pennsylvania State Association of Township
Commissioners; and
3. The Pennsylvania Association of Housing and Redevelopment Authorities; and
WHEREAS, Mellon Human Resources and Investor Solutions has been retained by the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities to determine the options available; and
WHEREAS, in a letter to the Mayor of Pittsburgh dated November 22, 2004 (attached), the Pennsylvania League of Municipalities has asked the City of Pittsburgh to participate in a survey of data being collected by Mellon;
Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Pittsburgh as follows:
Section 1. The Mayor is strongly urged to provide the data needed by Mellon Human Resources and Investor Solutions to complete its survey being used to determine options for health benefit programs.
Section 2. City Council's Clerk is directed to send a copy of this resolution to the Pennsylvania League of Cities and Municipalities.
