Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the Ringling Brother's and Barnum & Bailey for providing a program in Pittsburgh that serves the community SPONSORED BY COUNCILWOMAN TWANDA CARLISLE CO-SPONSORED BY COUNCILMEN GENE RICCIARDI, LUKE RAVENSTAHL, ALAN HERTZBERG, JIM MOTZNIK, DOUG SHIELDS, LEN BODACK, AND WILLIAM PEDUTO

Whereas, Ringling Brother's and Barnum & Bailey has initiated a discount coupon program that is designed to not only offer a discount for three upcoming circus performances, but also a percent of the proceeds from the redeemed coupons will benefit the Beverly Jewel Wall Lovelace Children's Program ; and

Whereas, Phinease Taylor Barnum, the master showman of the 19th century, founded the Grand Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan & Circus in 1870, featuring some of the world's most unusual attractions, such as General Tom Thumb, singer Jenny Lind, affectionately known as "The Swedish Nightingale" and Jumbo the Elephant; and

Whereas, In 1988, P.T. Barnum joined forces with James A. Bailey, establishing Barnum & Bailey's Greatest Show On Earth. Bailey led the circus into the 20th century after the death of P.T. Barnum, reaching new heights of popularity, and eventually joining forces in 1905 with another highly popular circus led by the Ringling Brothers; and

Whereas, the Ringling Brother's and Barnum & BaileyCircus flourished throughout the 20th Century as the largest and greatest traveling amusement enterprise of modern history, When the circus industry fell on hard times in the 1950's, music promoter Irvin Feld brought the circus in 1967 and resuscitated the genre as a premier American art form; and

Whereas, the Ringling Brother's and Barnum & Bailey Circus, under the direction of Irvin Feld and his son, Kenneth, have given the world with opportunity to see such legendary performers as animal trainer Gunther Gebel-Williams, the Living Unicorn, the Shanghai Acrobatic Troupe, Ringmaster Jonathon Lee Iverson, Airiana AThe Human Arrow and countless others; and

Whereas, Feld Entertainment, inc. under the leadership of Kenneth Feld, has turned a family tradition into what is truly The Greatest Show On Earth – a one of a kind experience that has been as American tradition for 134 years; and the Ringling Brot...
