Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, recognizes and commends Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh for their successful efforts to produce successful young men and women that benefit the Commonwealth by ensuring quality employees for the next millennium. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, declares Tuesday, October 26, 2004 "Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh has been region's premier one-to-one mentoring organization for more than 39 years. Since 1965, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh have matched more than 10,000 children with responsible, caring adult mentors; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh is a nonprofit, prevention-based agency that serves the community by providing quality mentoring relationships to children who are primarily from single family homes; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters typically enrolls children between the ages of 6 and 13. However, once matched, a child may remain enrolled in the program until age 18 or graduate from high school and many of the friendships continue long afterward; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh make services available to all single-parent children residing within Allegheny, Washington and Greene Counties regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, gender or creed; and

WHEREAS, the children who are enrolled in Big Brothers Big Sisters have problems associated with personal development, school, family and/or the community. A large percentage of the children in the program reside in high-risk environments were substance abuse, criminal involvement, teenage pregnancy, school dropouts, and /or dependency on federal assistance are present in the home or in the immediate community; and

WHEREAS, Big Brothers Big Sisters offers a positive, broad-based program that focuses less on specific problems after they occur and more on meeting youth's most basic developmental needs.


WHEREAS, each year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh impacts the lives of more than 1,000 at-risk children throughout the Southwest of Pennsylvania in this meaningful and lasting way; and
