WHEREAS, in conjunction with the state legislature’s celebration of Union Organizing Week, Pittsburgh City Council makes the following Proclamation in Support of the Organizing Efforts of the Staff Union of Pitt, a generational organizing effort brought forth by the people who make Pitt work.

WHEREAS, the University of Pittsburgh is one of the largest employers in the City of Pittsburgh with over 5,700 unionized faculty members; 2,500 graduate employees; and over 7,000 staff employees; and
WHEREAS, the staff at the University of Pittsburgh are essential to Pitt’s ability to function by writing grants, securing funding, managing complex financial and record-keeping systems, performing IT work, planning events, coordinating scheduling, running communications, running stores, advocating for students and programs, and playing an integral role in campus life in countless other ways; and
WHEREAS, University of Pittsburgh staff employees are organizing a union with the United Steelworkers in order to negotiate fair pay, clear paths for career advancement, maintenance of good benefits, and respect and dignity on the job; and
WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh has a vibrant labor community and a rich history of supporting workers’ efforts to organize;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that The Pittsburgh City Council recognizes the importance of unions generally, and commends the staff employees of the University of Pittsburgh for their efforts in their campaign to join the United Steelworkers as Staff Union of Pitt.
