Title: WHEREAS, Brashear High School Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) was formed in 2012 with 12 students of diverse identities as a means to make Brashear a safer school for LGBTQIA+ students, starting by developing and executing educational presentations on LGBTQIA+ issues and concerns to their peers;

WHEREAS, Brashear High School Gender Sexuality Alliance (GSA) was formed in 2012 with 12 students of diverse identities as a means to make Brashear a safer school for LGBTQIA+ students, starting by developing and executing educational presentations on LGBTQIA+ issues and concerns to their peers;

WHEREAS, in 2014 Brashear GSA successfully advocated to school administration for the creation of guidelines on how to support transgender students;  

 

WHEREAS, after the successful administration of the guidelines for transgender students at Brashear, GSA students lobbied the Pittsburgh Board of Education to create a policy for all schools in the Pittsburgh Public School District; as a result, the current gender inclusive policy passed unanimously in July of 2016; 

 

WHEREAS, GSA students present yearly in Brashear health classes around LGBTQIA+ issues, and have done so for over a decade, bringing about a positive culture shift; 

 

WHEREAS, students and families often come to Brashear intentionally, knowing LGBTQIA+ students have the support and tools to enjoy a positive educational experience;

 

WHEREAS, from its inception, Brashear GSA continues to be a major voice in educating and enlightening peers, faculty, policy-makers and beyond; 

 

WHEREAS, we also congratulate Brashear faculty member Mr. Devin Browne and other faculty, administrators and supporters for their guidance and dedication to the GSA;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend the Brashear High School Gender Sexuality Alliance, its students and advisors for their commitment of cultivating a culture of understanding, acceptance and diversity;  

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare June 2, 2023, to be “Brashear GSA Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
