Title: WHEREAS, throughout its history, Pittsburgh has hosted a vibrant, diverse, and innovative music scene that provides the City with great shows and venues, attracts more and more people to the City, and enhances its reputation as a lively place to make your home; and,

WHEREAS, throughout its history, Pittsburgh has hosted a vibrant, diverse, and innovative music scene that provides the City with great shows and venues, attracts more and more people to the City, and enhances its reputation as a lively place to make your home; and,

WHEREAS, since 2013 the Pittonkatonk Festival, an inclusive event that combines music, food, and culture from around the world, has been held annually in Pittsburgh. This year’s lineup includes artists from Burkina Faso, Morocco, France, Congo, Ukraine, and Canada; and,

 

WHEREAS, Pittonkatonk is a free, family-friendly community celebration which blurs the lines between performers and spectators and which connects the dots between community, organizers, and euphoric musical experiences; and,

 

WHEREAS, Pittonkatonk supports music education in Pittsburgh area high schools and through educational programming encourages social engagement between musicians, audiences, and community members; and,

 

WHEREAS, Pittonkatonk works with adults and teens from Pittsburgh to create public performance opportunities designed to give a voice vulnerable people in our city, with the goal of creating a musical space for everyone, regardless of age, race, gender, class, or religion; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Pittonkatonk Festival will take place at the Schenley Park Veterans Pavilion on Saturday May 13, 2023.  There will be no admission charge but pot-luck style food donations are encouraged.

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize Pittonkatonk’s contribution to Pittsburgh’s vibrant arts scene and commends its commitment to artistic, social, and musical education; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, May 13, 2023, to be “PITTONKATONK DAY” in the City of Pittsburgh.
