WHEREAS, Jau’mair Garland, a native of the South Side neighborhood of Pittsburgh, began training under Trevor Miles at a local YMCA where he was introduced to creative movement and hip-hop; and,

WHEREAS, in eighth grade Jau’mair began attending his alma mater, Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA); and,
WHEREAS, while attending CAPA, Garland joined Reed Dance II under the direction of Greer Reed, and simultaneously refined his technique at Ballet Academy of Pittsburgh under the direction of Steven and Lindsay Piper; and,
WHEREAS, in 2020, Jau’mair was named a National YoungArts winner in Modern/Contemporary dance; and,
WHEREAS, Jau’mair Garland is a current student at the USC Glorya Kaufman School of Dance, where he will graduate in 2024; and,
WHEREAS, Jau’mair will be performing as a member of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater Company at the Benedum Center for the Performing Arts on May 9, 2023, featuring a mixed repertory program that includes contemporary works and the beloved signature work Revelations, a universal anthem of resilience that resounds anew more than 60 years after its premiere; and,
WHEREAS, this will be Garland’s first season with the Company; and,
WHEREAS, Jau’mair Garland is a proud son of the City of Pittsburgh and continues to honor our city through his talent and love of dance performance.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby celebrate the outstanding talent of Jau’mair Garland; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, May 9, 2023, to be “Jau’mair Garland Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
