WHEREAS, 2023 marks, WQED-FM's 50th year on the broadcast airwaves at 89.3 FM; and,

WHEREAS, during WQED-FM's first broadcast on, January 25, 1973, WQED Board Chair and PPG General Counsel Leland Hazard, quoting Goethe, said that "every day at least one ought to hear a little song, read a good poem, see a fine picture and if it were possible speak a few reasonable words,"; and,
WHEREAS, this quote forms the purpose of WQED-FM; and,
WHEREAS, WQED plans a year-long celebration as the region's only classical musical radio station; and,
WHEREAS, for the past 50 years, WQED-FM has served as the voice of the arts, showcasing musical talent, arts, cultural events, and the artistic luminaries of Pittsburgh's past, present and future; and,
WHEREAS, WQED-FM is often a primary resource for music lovers to encounter local artists and performing groups, as well as the timeless masters of classical music; and,
WHEREAS, WQED-FM enriches the lives of tens of thousands who tune in to discover emerging artists, connect with local culture, enjoy unique musical curations, and experience other innovative programming; and,
WHEREAS, WQED-FM broadcasters Jim Cunningham, Anna Singer, and Bryan Sejvar have collectively devoted 89 years to enhancing Pittsburghers' quality of life through the genre of classical music; and,
WHEREAS, WQED-FM can be heard not only on 89.3 FM, but also on WQEJ-FM 89.7 Johnstown, and enjoyed worldwide through streaming, smart speakers and the WQED app; and,
WHEREAS, WQED-FM became one of the first stations in the world to broadcast its signal over the internet 24-hours a day; and,
WHEREAS, WQED-FM can be heard by travelers at the Greater Pittsburgh International Airport and in the PRT subway stations through Q the Music; and,
WHEREAS, WQED-FM has enjoyed a long-standing partnership with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, annually producing and distributing a national 26-week concert series.
