Title: WHEREAS, Tim Stevens was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on May 4, 1945 to Georgetta and Jaspar Stevens. He was raised in the Hill District; and,

WHEREAS, Tim Stevens was born in Pittsburgh, Pa., on May 4, 1945 to Georgetta and Jaspar Stevens. He was raised in the Hill District; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Stevens graduated from Schenley High School, and he received a bachelor's degree in political science and minor in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh. Stevens received his master's degree in urban and regional planning from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public and International Affairs; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Stevens is also a well-known jazz performer and vocalist. He has written a variety of songs, including one recorded by Nancy Wilson. He has produced and released several albums, both solo and with his ensemble, the Tim Stevens Project. He also serves as a contributing editor for Pittsburgh Magazine's jazz section; and,

 

WHEREAS, Stevens served as president of the NAACP Pittsburgh branch from 1994-2004. He also helped to establish the Black Political Empowerment Project (B-PEP, seated in the Hill District) in 1986, of which he is the current CEO and chairman. The goal of B-PEP is to empower African Americans to vote in any and all elections. Stevens has also made it his goal to address police brutality, lack of opportunity for African Americans and struggles of marginalized communities; and,   

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Stevens is married to his wife Jennifer, and the father to one son, Marcus; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Mr. Stevens for a life dedicated to Civil Rights Advocacy, making a more equitable Pittsburgh for the rights of Black citizens to political and social freedom and equality ; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, November 4, 2022, to be “Tim Stevens Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
