WHEREAS, Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM) was launched nationwide in October 1987 as a way to connect and unite individuals and organizations working on domestic violence issues while raising awareness for those issues; and,

WHEREAS, the crime of Domestic Violence was not given a name nor recognized as a national problem until the early 1970s. As the years progressed, domestic violence in American society began to be seen as a violent criminal act in violation of an individual's privacy, dignity, security and humanity. Today, domestic violence is acknowledged as a serious, violent crime and is the most under reported crime in America; and,

WHEREAS, more than 80 calls to 911 for domestic violence are received each day in Allegheny County alone. The Allegheny County District Attorney's Office Domestic Violence Prosecution Unit prosecutes cases involving current or former sexual or intimate partners who engage in criminal conduct of a threatening, intimidating or physically violent nature; and

WHEREAS, District Attorney Stephen Zappala recently joined the Intimate Partner Violence Reform Leadership Task Force, a joint effort created by Allegheny County Executive Rich Fitzgerald and Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey, to lead intimate partner violence reform efforts in Western Pennsylvania; and,

WHEREAS, D.A. Zappala puts the plight of the victims first and works with shelters for victims of abuse, providing needed funds, invaluable resources and training with law enforcement with regards to Domestic Violence calls; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr. and the Domestic Violence Prosecution Unit for their selfless commitment to victims of Domestic Violence; and,

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Tuesday, October 25, 2022 to be "District Attorney Stephen Zappala Jr and Domestic Viol...
