WHEREAS, BikePGH’s mission is to improve quality of life and reduce the harmful effects of car dependence on our communities by transforming our streets so that biking and walking can be commonplace for all Pittsburghers, and;

WHEREAS, BikePGH has raised significant awareness about how safe biking and walking help address some of the biggest challenges of our time including equity, affordability, accessibility, air quality, climate change, public health, and traffic violence; and
WHEREAS, BikePGH has led the local movement for Complete Streets, which is transforming how the City of Pittsburgh thinks about, plans for, and designs its built environment to promote walkable, bike able communities and safety for all Pittsburghers; and
WHEREAS, in 2022, BikePGH is celebrating 20 years of remarkable achievements, including completing the fleet of bike racks on buses, publishing eight editions of the Official Pittsburgh Bike Map, teaching countless Pittsburghers of all ages how to safely ride bicycles, and helping the City of Pittsburgh install thousands of bike racks and over 100 miles of bikeways; and
WHEREAS, BikePGH focuses attention on equity issues related to the built environment and cycling through their Transportation Justice Learning Series and Women and Non-binary Biking program; and
WHEREAS, with PedalPGH and OpenStreetsPGH, BikePGH produces some of the City’s most popular events allowing residents and visitors alike to bike and walk the unique and beautiful neighborhoods of Pittsburgh, while significantly contributing to the local economy.
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh, does hereby congratulate BikePGH on its two decades of excellent work on behalf of people who bike and walk in the City of Pittsburgh; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare October 4th, 2022, as “BikePGH Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
