WHEREAS, Pittsburgh and its surrounding communities have been recognized as a hub for innovation and 21st Century problem-solving; and,

WHEREAS, the area's built-in advantages, including diversifying industries, strong research institutions, access to capital, and-most importantly-skilled and community-minded people give Western Pennsylvania the chance to serve as an international leader on climate solutions; and,

WHEREAS, strong majorities of Pennsylvanians as well as Americans support real, ambitious clean energy initiatives that will mitigate emissions, pollution, and the most devastating consequences presented by a warming planet; and,

WHEREAS, a full-scale commitment to investing in renewable energy technologies could not only further environmental protection, but also create thousands of new, safe, family-sustaining jobs for the region; and,

WHEREAS, in recognition of all the above, the Clean Energy Ministerial selected Pittsburgh to host its Global Energy Action Forum from September 21-23 of this year; and,

WHEREAS, the Forum is a tremendous opportunity to showcase Pittsburgh's capacity to leverage its ample resources to help lead the way into a renewable energy future; and,

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh takes seriously its obligation to work alongside governmental, nonprofit, and industry partners in forging the dynamic climate solutions that are required at this moment.

NOW, THEREFORE IT BE RESOLVED, Pittsburgh City Council supports the stated mission and aims for the Global Energy Action Forum, enthusiastically welcomes participants to share their ideas here in our City, and supports actions coming out of the forum that will advance substantive clean energy solutions rather than half measures that neither address the environmental challenges we face nor break our dependency on fossil fuels.
