Title
WHEREAS, the late Kevin "Bat" Andrews was born on December 17, 1967, and grew up in the Hill District. After graduating from Brashear High School in 1985, Kevin chose to study barbering at Pittsburgh Beauty Academy, earning his Barber Manager license in 1994; and,

WHEREAS, Kevin, affectionately known as "Bat", managed Aiken's Quality Cuts until 2003, when he opened Bat's Barber Shop in East Liberty. He hosted several apprenticeships for aspiring barbers. His goal was not only to provide a quality service, but act as a cornerstone in the community and ensure a safe space for the neighborhood; and,

WHEREAS, being an advocate for reading, Bat partnered with the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh to install a stationary library at the Barber Shop for children, and in 2015, the shop received the Community Partner of the Year Award from Carnegie Library. The Barber Shop collaborated with Pittsburgh Public Schools to provide free "back to school" haircuts and he organized several Toy Drives during the Holidays for children; and,

WHEREAS, for over ten years, Bat worked with the University Of Pittsburgh School Of Health for the "Take a Health Professional to the People Day", to provide free access to HealthCare professionals. During the pandemic, Bat's Barbershop hosted a UPMC COVID-19 vaccination center to educate the community and receive vaccinations; and,

WHEREAS, one of Kevin's proudest accomplishments was mentoring youth from the community, to whom he often gave small jobs in the shop, advised and supported them. He watched as some ended up in college, the military or landing their dream job; and,

WHEREAS, sadly, Kevin "Bat" Andrews passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2022. His passion for the community was second only to his love for his wife, Crystal Andrews and his children, Terrel & Angel Andrews; and,
