WHEREAS, a lifelong Democrat, Connie Wellons served as Committee Woman, Secretary, and Vice Chair of the 18th Ward in a career that spanned over 60 years; and,

WHEREAS, Connie Wellons was later appointed by former Mayor Pete Flaherty to serve as Chair to the Human Relations Commission, to which she was the first black American woman to hold this position and she dedicated 3 terms and 18 years of her knowledge to the City of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, a proud and dedicated member of the NAACP, Connie Wellons aided the organization’s contentious efforts of voter registration and additionally became a personality for “NAACP’s “On the Line Radio Show”, which aired on WAMO on Saturday mornings, along with Alma Fox; and,
WHEREAS; Connie Wellons graduated the Pittsburgh Police Academy at the age of 52 and utilized her expertise to protect and serve the young students of the South Hills High School during the perilous time of the race riots and,
WHEREAS, loved and admired by all students, regardless of race, Connie Wellons continued her career in security until her retirement in 1996, where she last served as the Head of Security at Reizenstein Middle School; and,
WHEREAS, Connie Wellons currently is a proud member of the Beltzhoover Neighborhood Council and Secretary of the Beltzhoover Citizens Community Development Corporation. Her dedication to aiding her community alongside the BCCDC had resulted in several new and rehabilitated homes, a senior apartment complex on 29 Sylvania, and a health care center; and,
AND WHEREAS, I love Ms. Wellons just like she were family; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Connie Wellons for her invaluable skills and accomplishments that helped shaped the City of Pittsburgh to be a city of kindness and inclusion; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare, Wednesday, June 22nd, 2022, to be “Connie Wellons Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
