WHEREAS, Pittsburgh has one of the largest, most vital, and most engaged populations of elder citizens, and they are among the most vulnerable people as targets of physical, financial, and emotional abuse, and

WHEREAS, over a thousand reports of fraud and financial theft scams have stolen a million dollars a month from thousands of elder victims, and
WHEREAS, The Elder Abuse Task Force was created to coordinate the actions of the Courts, Law Enforcement, Social Service Providers, and the District Attorney's Office to bring Justice to the elder victims of abuse and bring the abusers to Justice.
WHEREAS, Innovative local programs for outreach and information like the DA's Senior Justice Advocate Program and Fraud Squad have reached tens of thousands of seniors and prevented $25 million annually in financial losses.
WHEREAS, new technology has continuously improved and been applied to the investigation and prosecution of crimes against the elderly the social services have grown to meet the special needs of the Senior Population and reassure them, that they may feel isolated, but they are not alone, and
NOW THEREFORE IT BE RESOLVED, Abuse Awareness Day was created to raise awareness and impact the physical, financial, and emotional safety of elders, and to encourage the hundreds of people involved in investigating, prosecuting, and protecting our elders to continue their mission and work protecting and defending the rights of our most vulnerable and beloved generations
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Wednesday, June 15, 2022 as “Elder Abuse Awareness Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
