WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh Special Deployment Division (SDD) of the Bureau of Police consists of the Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security, the Bomb Squad, K-9 Unit, the Mounted Patrol, River Rescue, SWAT, Traffic Division and the Public Safety Planning Unit; and,

WHEREAS, SDD provides specially trained and equipped officers citywide as well as for Region 13 of the Department of Homeland Security and they work closely with Federal, State and local law enforcement; and,
WHEREAS, each unique set of Officers are highly trained to deal with specialized issues such as, but not limited to, hazardous materials and devices, patrolling the three rivers, search and rescue, hostage situations, collision investigations and ensuring the safety of residents at events within the City of Pittsburgh; and,
WHEREAS, in addition, highly trained Canine Officers are utilized for unique situations such as searching for endangered people, electronics sniffing to locate computer chips, and detecting drugs or explosives; and,
WHEREAS, the Special Deployment Division is committed to working hand in hand with the community, which is evident in their participation in the countless community events, which is building stronger police/ community relationships throughout the city. Under the direction of Chief Schubert, prior Commander Clarence Trapp and current Commander Ray Rippole, the SDD sends Mounted Horses, the Bomb Squad, SWAT and the K-9 units to community events and to city parades, all while focusing on public safety; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Special Deployment Division of the Bureau of Police and thank its unsung heroes of law enforcement and acknowledge their tremendous work in building Police-Community relations; and,
