Title: WHEREAS, Sheriff William P. Mullen of Banksville will celebrate his retirement on Saturday, February 12, 2022, after 52 years in law enforcement; and,

WHEREAS, Sheriff William P. Mullen of Banksville will celebrate his retirement on Saturday, February 12, 2022, after 52 years in law enforcement; and,

WHEREAS, Mr. Mullen began his long successful career in law enforcement in 1969 when he was hired by the Pittsburgh Police as a patrol officer and served 37 years. After retiring from the city, he assumed the position of Allegheny County Chief Deputy Sheriff in 2006 and was elected as the 53rd Sheriff of Allegheny County that same year. He has since been re-elected to three consecutive terms; and

 

WHEREAS, he has had numerous accomplishments over his tenure, including, but not limited to, the establishment of a Mortgage Conciliation Program and Foreclosure Assistance Hot line, implementation of a Courthouse Emergency Response Team, and led the Agency to its official accreditation by the Pennsylvania Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission (PLEAC); and,

WHEREAS, at no cost to taxpayers, he attained mobile fingerprint scanning systems, a bi-fuel vehicle, and purchased a wheelchair accessible emergency vehicle to transport handicapped prisoners, which saved the County over $500,000 in private ambulance services. His strict fiscal controls enabled the Sheriff’s Office to remain under budget every year Sheriff Mullen was in office; and,

WHEREAS, his office was also known for its numerous community service activities such as delivering turkeys to disadvantaged families during the holidays, annual Shop with a Sheriff, matching underprivileged kids with deputy sheriffs to select apparel, outerwear and toys during the holiday season, and Tree of Hope program, providing thousands of at-risk children with Christmas presents; and, 

WHEREAS, friends and peers describe him as having a tough exterior, with a humble, compassionate heart, and an honorable Sheriff who restored integrity and professionalism to the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby congratulate Sheriff William P. Mullen on his retirement and recognize him for his outstanding public service, professionalism and commitment to the City of Pittsburgh and the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, February 12, 2022     to be “Sheriff William P. Mullen Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
