WHEREAS, David Hughes is not your typical 13-year-old; and,

 

Body

WHEREAS, instead of spending his time with his friends, he loves to spend time with his pap pap to learn how to work on cars and be a handyman around the house. He enjoys learning practical things and acting upon what he has learned; and,

 

WHEREAS, he also enjoys helping others and takes care of his elderly neighbors by cutting grass in the summer and removing snow in the winter; and,

 

WHEREAS, on Tuesday, November 23, David was at his pap’s house in Elliott when a fire broke out at a neighbor’s house. He noticed the flames and heard a woman screaming for help. Upon closer look, he saw woman wrapped in a blanket that caught fire, standing on the roof; and,

 

WHEREAS, David immediately told his pap he needed to get a ladder to get the neighbor off the roof and he called 911 as he was running for the ladder. He tried to get the ladder to her, but it was too short.  The woman jumped to the ground to escape the flames as the emergency crew that David called arrived; and,

 

WHEREAS, when he is not saving lives or helping others, David can be found playing baseball for Elliott, where he grew up, and playing football for Northgate Middle School, where he currently attends the 7th grade; and,

 

WHEREAS, David attends Living Word Ministry on the Northside and likes relaxing with his three dogs; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend David Hughes for his community service and his bravery and quick thinking in order to save a life; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Tuesday, December 20, 2021 to be “David Hughes Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
