Resolution calling on URA to report to the Pittsburgh City Council all ongoing programs and initiatives that support the city’s food system.

 

Body

Whereas, the ability to access food is fundamentally connected to housing, transportation, employment, community development, and other factors; and,

 

Whereas, rates of food insecurity in the City of Pittsburgh are highly racialized, with black residents making up over 70% of the population in Healthy Food Priority Areas; and,

 

Whereas, there are many individuals, organizations, businesses, and other entities working to grow, process, distribute, buy, sell, increase access to, and compost food within the City of Pittsburgh that need further investment to expand their efforts; and,

 

Whereas, A holistic, systems level approach is necessary to address these challenges; and,

 

Whereas, investing in food systems infrastructure provides long term benefits to our public health, neighborhood, and economic development; and,

 

Be it resolved by the Council of the City of Pittsburgh as follows:

Section 1. Pittsburgh City Council calls on the URA to analyze and report out all support for food security, food-oriented small businesses, food growing, and food infrastructure in the city of Pittsburgh performed since January 1, 2019.

Section 2. This report shall include measures of:

A)                     Job creation within the food industry

B)                     The number of food related businesses supported through the URA

C)                     Funds distributed to support the city’s food system

D)                     Technical assistance provided to food related businesses

 

Section 3. The URA will provide this report no later than 90 days after the passage of this resolution.
