Title

WHEREAS, within the City of Pittsburgh, public safety and the protection of our children and families is paramount, and;

 

Body

WHEREAS, crossing guards stand faithfully at their posts along busy intersections in every kind of weather, dealing with distracted and speeding motorists to complete their duty of providing a safe environment for children crossing the street, and;

 

WHEREAS, crossing guards are therefore trained professionals who provide an essential service to our community and deserve special recognition for their tireless efforts and;

 

WHEREAS, each day, our crossing guards ensure that thousands of children arrive and depart school safely; and provide children a familiar face every morning, keeping an eye on their wellbeing, and alerting authorities to dangerous drivers and;

 

WHEREAS, school crossing guards help reinforce in the minds of the people they assist, the importance of traffic-hazard identification and safe street crossing behavior and;

 

WHEREAS, the City of Pittsburgh is committed to recognizing the hard work and dedication of these individuals who perform this vital service protecting pedestrians across the city and;

 

WHEREAS, Cathy Gamble, a resident of the City of Pittsburgh, has served her neighbors while dancing, singing, blowing kisses, waving, and bringing immeasurable joy and;

 

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of the Lawrenceville neighborhood, working at Neid’s as a teenager, Cathy is a true pillar of the community, and;

 

WHEREAS, Cathy is known for teaching kids, and adults, songs like "the Friday song" and the safety song and leading singalongs: "cross on green if you know what I mean, cross on red and you'll be dead", and;

 

WHEREAS, Cathy has been a shoulder to cry on for many when going through a hard time, even bringing people flowers, and;

 

WHEREAS, Butler Street and Lawrenceville have become heavily trafficked communities, Cathy ensures the safety of school children, adults, cyclists, and motorists while doing her best to brighten their day, and;

 

WHEREAS, Cathy was recognized in the Trib, KDKA’S Kidsburgh, and ImaginePgh for her unique approach to her profession as a crossing guard, and;

 

WHEREAS, Cathy has volunteered on the Lawrenceville United AdvantAGE Steering Committee, helping to plan events and programs to care for older adults in Lawrenceville, and;

 

WHEREAS, Cathy has provided care to multiple generations of people in her own family, while also caring for generations of people outside of her family as a crossing guard, and;

 

WHEREAS, Cathy Gamble has served the community as a crossing guard for 20 years, ensuring a safe and exciting journey throughout Lawrenceville and various neighborhoods across the city, and;

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh recognizes Cathy Gamble for her astounding service to our youngest, most vulnerable pedestrians, and children walking between home and school; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh proclaims Tuesday, November 30th, 2021, as “Cathy Gamble Day”
