Title

WHEREAS, Horace Lee Turner was born on September 23rd, 1921 in Mobile, Alabama. When he was 6 or 7 years old, his family moved to Pittsburgh’s Hill District where he attended Mill School and Fifth Avenue High School; and,

WHEREAS, when his father bought him a bent-up trumpet, he was by his teacher at Fifth Avenue High, and then by Carl McVicker Sr., a premier private teacher at Pittsburgh Musical Institute; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Turner opened Turner’s Record Shop located at 2160 Centre Ave. It was successful for 10 years. He then went to Gateway Tech where he learned to repair radios and television sets; and,

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Turner was drafted into the Army and stationed at Camp Shenango in Butler, PA. The band was attached to Deshon Hospital and he served his entire 4.5 years in Butler. The band used to broadcast over WWSW every Monday and he met a lot of celebrities during that time; and,

 

WHEREAS, after he was discharged, Mr. Turner enrolled in Pittsburgh Musical Institute, and received his degree; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Horace Turner for his service in the Army and his contribution to Jazz music; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Friday, October 8, 2021, to be “Horace Lee Turner Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
