WHEREAS, during the week of October 3-9, 2021, children, adults, and teachers will learn how to stay safe in case of a fire. The City of Pittsburgh’s Fire Prevention Department has been working on a National Campaign, along with help from a first-grade teacher in Ohio, to educate schools and families during Fire Marshall Day, October 5, 2021. The interactive lessons will be viewed by 150 different cities on the East and West coasts throughout the Country and can be taught to students throughout the school year; and,

WHEREAS, in addition, the City of Pittsburgh’s Fire Bureau has been working hard to create virtual trainings, during the COVID pandemic, to make sure our schools and businesses are able to remain in compliance; and,

WHEREAS, since over 60% of reported home fire deaths resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke detector, the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire has a Smoke Detector Program which will supply and install smoked detectors to any City resident who requests one; and,

WHEREAS, for the deaf or hard of hearing, there are smoke alarms and alert devices which include strobe lights that flash when the smoke alarm sounds and there are even pillow or bed shakers designed to work with your smoke alarm; and,

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire for their commitment to providing lifesaving public education and equipment in an effort to drastically decrease casualties caused by fires, and we encourage the citizens of Pittsburgh to participate in fire prevention activities at home, work and school;

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares the week of October 3 through 9th, 2021, to be "Fire Prevention Week" in the City of Pittsburgh.
