Title: WHEREAS, this year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Opening of the Elizabethan Herb and Shakespeare Garden; and,

WHEREAS, this year marks the 40th Anniversary of the Opening of the Elizabethan Herb and Shakespeare Garden; and,

WHEREAS, the members of the Western Pennsylvania Unit of the Herb Society of America have designed, developed, funded, and maintained a public herb garden in the Terraced Garden area in Mellon Park; and, 

 

WHEREAS, the property was first developed as the Rose Garden for the Richard Beatty Mellon residence on the property in 1912; and,  

 

WHEREAS, in 1977, after the property was deeded to the City of Pittsburgh, the Western PA Herb Society agreed to redesign the area as an herb garden, by supplying and maintaining the plants; and,

 

WHEREAS, through the years members of the Western PA Herb Society have planted trees, shrubs, and approximately 300 plants. The garden is divided into 12 specialty herb beds, including the Shakespeare Garden; and,

 

WHEREAS, The Herb Society will continue to offer to the people of Greater Pittsburgh and all its visitors access to this garden where they can enjoy these wonderful plants and learn about their traditional uses through the centuries, and

 

WHEREAS, The City of Pittsburgh congratulates the members of this Herb Society as they celebrate their 40th year of volunteering to maintain this public garden and wishes a warm welcome to all who are attending.

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the 40th Anniversary of the opening of the Elizabethan Herb Garden, funded and maintained by The Western Pennsylvania Unit of The Herb Society of America.
