Title: WHEREAS, over two thousand consumer directed homecare workers go to work in the Pittsburgh region every day and care for some of our most vulnerable citizens including senior citizens and people with disabilities; and,

WHEREAS, over two thousand consumer directed homecare workers go to work in the Pittsburgh region every day and care for some of our most vulnerable citizens including senior citizens and people with disabilities; and,

 

Body

WHEREAS, throughout the COVID-19 crisis, we salute our essential homecare workers who have risked their lives while ensuring the wellbeing and independence of their consumers, and yet they are being paid less than $12 per hour, without benefits; and,

 

WHEREAS, the effort to raise the Federal minimum wage to $15 has been blocked by the U.S. Senate Parliamentarian; and,

 

WHEREAS, homecare workers and other essential workers have waited for over a decade for a raise. In order to raise awareness for the demand to raise the minimum wage and protest the inaction of elected leaders, homecare workers began a 3-day fast protest on Wednesday, March 3 to put Americans on the path to $15; and,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby address the United States Congress and the Pennsylvania General Assembly; and, 

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby call for immediate action to raise the minimum wage to $15.
