WHEREAS, Women in Data Science (WiDS) Pittsburgh is back at CMU for its fourth annual conference on Wednesday, March 10, to be held virtually over three days; and,

WHEREAS, WiDS Pittsburgh is the only women-centric data analytics conference in Western Pennsylvania. The conference is open to the public and is free to high school students which provides them an opportunity to see the possibilities in this field; and,
WHEREAS, the WiDS initiative started as a conference at Stanford in 2015 and is now an international conference with over 150 satellite forums across every continent except Antarctica. The conference features exclusively female speakers from academia and industry, who aim to support women in the field and also to inspire and educate data scientists worldwide regardless of gender; and,
WHEREAS, the conference was held in Pittsburgh for the first time in 2018 and had nearly 150 local participants, including students, faculty, companies, non-profits and campus organizations. In 2020, over 120.000 people attended in person and via Livestream and Facebook Live; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Women in Data Science for enlightening and influencing the public in the field of Data Science; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare March 10. 2021 to be “Women in Data Science Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
