WHEREAS, breast cancer is the second-leading cause of death among women, with approximately one in eight women being diagnosed at some point in their lifetime; and,

WHEREAS, Breast Cancer Awareness Month helps to increase attention for the need for early detection and treatment as well as palliative care of this disease; and,
WHEREAS, early detection of the disease remains the cornerstone of breast cancer control and cure; and,
WHEREAS, the majority of deaths occur in low and middle-income areas, where most women with breast cancer are diagnosed in late stages due mainly to lack of awareness on early detection and barriers to health services; and,
WHEREAS, during the month of October, Coughlin’s Law, located at 10 Virginia Ave in Mount Washington, is helping to bring awareness and free services for early detection of breast cancer by hosting their annual fundraiser; and,
WHEREAS, $1 will be donated for each specialty menu item sold during the month of October by the 3 companies supporting the event: Jim Beam Distillery, Southern Tier Brewery, and Sysco Food Services. Coughlin’s Law will match 100% of all donations and 100% of the proceeds from raffles, some provided by the Penguins, Steelers and the Pirates, will also be given towards the cause; and,
NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby thank Coughlin’s Law for helping to bring awareness of this devastating disease and help raise funds to potentially save lives; and,
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare the month of October, 2020 to be “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” in the City of Pittsburgh.
