Title: WHEREAS, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association was founded in 1998 by resident volunteers to address community matters of Pittsburgh's South Side Slopes neighborhood, which spans the sprawling southern hillside along the Monongahela River. It is where neighbors treasure their sixty-eight sets of public stairs, the wilds of South Side Park, and the panoramic views of Pittsburgh's skyline and beyond; and,

WHEREAS, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association was founded in 1998 by resident volunteers to address community matters of Pittsburgh’s South Side Slopes neighborhood, which spans the sprawling southern hillside along the Monongahela River. It is where neighbors treasure their sixty-eight sets of public stairs, the wilds of South Side Park, and the panoramic views of Pittsburgh’s skyline and beyond; and,

WHEREAS, the mission of the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association is to maintain, foster and improve the quality of life, safety, and unity of the Slopes neighborhood; and,

 

WHEREAS, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association became a Pennsylvania 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation in 2007 and worked in partnership with South Side Local Development Company, South Side Planning Forum, City, County, and State official agencies, and particularly the City of Pittsburgh’s Departments of Public Safety and Public Works, to advocate on behalf of Slopes residents; and,

 

WHEREAS, over the years the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association has held regular community and board of directors meetings to care for the Slopes neighborhood, address neighborhood matters, develop public stairs improvement projects, and organize event fundraisers to build resources to maintain the public steps and public areas of the Slopes neighborhood; and,

 

WHEREAS, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association has many notable accomplishments, including the illumination of the 18th Street steps for public safety and artistic attraction, the 18th & Josephine Streets South Side Slopes Pylon, the Bandi Schaum Community Garden, the Windom/McArdle Gateway Sign and Garden, the Knoxville Incline Greenway, the Church Route Steps Signage, and the beautiful Oakley Street Mosaic Steps Public Art Project; and,

 

WHEREAS, the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association instituted its popular annual StepTrek, this year celebrating the twentieth consecutive year of this annual fundraiser, as a way to invite Slopes residents, other Pittsburghers, and visitors from across the nation and around the world to enjoy discovering the Slopes public stairs and celebrating with friends old and new in South Side Park; and,

 

WHEREAS, we hereby celebrate the twentieth anniversary of the South Side Slopes Annual StepTrek, this year from October 1st to 7th, and acknowledge all these years of inviting everyone to discover and enjoy the neighborhood attractions along the steps of the South Side Slopes.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does recognize, honor, celebrate and thank the South Side Slopes Neighborhood Association, residents, and volunteers for their relentless commitment to the South Side Slopes and the City of Pittsburgh.

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, October 3, 2020, to be “South Side Slopes StepTrek Day” in the City of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
