Whereas; The United States Postal Service can locate its origins as far back as 1775 and the Second Continental Congress, making it one of the oldest public institutions in the Country, and,

Whereas; The United States Postal Service is rooted in a single principle: that every person in the United States - no matter who, no matter where - has the right to equal access to secure, efficient, and affordable mail service, and
Whereas; This commitment to universal service benefits all members of the public by providing equal access and service, and,
Whereas; In 2019 the United States Postal Service employed over 600,000 total Americans, including thousands of our nation’s veterans, and has maintained a commitment to a diverse workforce, and,
Whereas; The United States Postal Service is more affordable than private carriers, and more secure because of over 200 federal laws enforced by the Postal Inspection Service, and,
Whereas; Employees of the United States Postal Service are guaranteed dignity, respect, decent pay, benefits, and safe working conditions because of their representation by the American Postal Workers Union, and,
Whereas; The United States Postal Service delivers much needed medications for sick Americans, over 800,000 social security checks to seniors every month, support for a majority of American small businesses, and hundreds of millions of packages every year, and,
Whereas; The United States Postal Service is vital to our democracy through its handling of absentee and mail-in-ballots from overseas citizens, members of the armed forces, seniors, college students, and more while never having a statistically significant amount of voter fraud, and,
Whereas; The United States Postal service fully funds pensions and health care costs for its employees before they are even hired, and,
Whereas; President Trump removed Megan Brennan, the first female postmaster, and replaced her with campaign megadonor Louis DeJoy who has millions of dollars invested in competitors to the USPS, and,
Whereas; Mail sorting machines are being removed across the country and sweeping changes to Post Office practices are being taken with the express purpose of making it harder to vote by mail during a global pandemic which has already taken the lives of over 170,000 Americans, and,
Whereas; this unprecedented assault on the electoral process has resulted in warnings to States across the Country that some mail in votes will not be counted,
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED; That the Council of the City of Pittsburgh calls upon President Trump to end his assault on our free and fair elections, remove Louis DeJoy by Reinstating Megan Brennan, and return the phone call of Senator Casey to explain in detail the changes at the United States Postal Service.
