Title

WHEREAS, Sarah Jean Herbert was a lifelong Pittsburgher and community-minded citizen of the Spring Garden neighborhood, a graduate of Latimer Junior High School and Allegheny High School; and,

 

Body

WHEREAS, Sarah Jean was one of 10 kids in a German-Italian family, serving as a second mom to her younger brothers, and the tireless photographer of her family and travels throughout her life; and,

 

WHEREAS, Sarah Jean was the devoted wife and companion of Robert Herbert and loving stepmother to Marcy and Jessica Herbert; and,

 

WHEREAS, Sarah Jean was an exemplary employee of Chris Candies of Spring Garden and then a Lawrenceville candy company, never late to work, never taking a day off, for almost a decade; and,

 

WHEREAS, Sarah Jean answered the call from Chuck Klinger 20 years ago to start volunteering at the Spring Garden Food Bank and never stopped; and,

 

WHEREAS, Sarah Jean led the Spring Garden Food Bank over a decade ago, marshalling her impressive tenacity and organizational skills to feed 75 households every year, and even more in 2020; and,

 

WHEREAS, only Sarah Jean was allowed to sign up three times the number of children allowed from each community for Allegheny General Hospital’s Christmas party - because all her kids always showed up; and,

 

WHEREAS, Sarah Jean was quick to send detailed, personalized thank-you notes for every donation to the food bank, from the smallest to the biggest, as well as notes of encouragement to friends who were struggling; and,

 

WHEREAS, Sarah Jean was one Northsider about whom no one ever had to wonder where she stood, as she always championed the good and diligently served others; and,

 

WHEREAS, behind her direct, no-nonsense exterior Sarah Jean hid one of the most caring, steadfast hearts you could ever be lucky enough to encounter; and,

 

WHEREAS, Sarah Jean is an irreplaceable wife, mother, community leader and dear friend whose passing grieves us all and whom we shall all dearly miss,

 

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby commend Sarah Jean Herbert for her many years of tenacious devotion to the mission of the Spring Garden Food Bank and the wellbeing of all of her neighbors in the Northside, especially those less fortunate; and,

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh declares Tuesday, July 28, 2020 to be “Sarah Jean Herbert Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
