WHEREAS, Brenda Waters was born in North Carolina and raised in Washington DC. She attended the University of Maryland and earned a master's degree in public relations from American University, but considers the City of Pittsburgh her home; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Waters joined KDKA in 1987 where she began as a general assignment reporter covering breaking news at the CBS affiliate. In 1990, she co-anchored KDKA's first weekday morning newscast, and for years co-anchored the weekend evening news; and,
WHEREAS, during her career, Brenda has earned much notoriety, including an Emmy, for a segment called "On A Positive Note" where she profiled local unsung heroes. She has always been compelled to find the good in people, which was a quality her parents taught her when they told her" the only time you look down at someone is when you are reaching down to pick them up"; and,
WHEREAS, in addition, Ms. Waters has received many honors such as "Who's Who Among Black Americans", two Associated Press Awards, the Cecile B. Springer Womenpower Award, and The Pittsburgh Courier also named Brenda among its 50 Women of Excellence in 2008; and,
WHEREAS, Brenda is very Active in the community, as is evident when the Ebenezer Baptist Church, in the Hill District, honored her twice as one of the 100 outstanding women in the community. Brenda serves on the Sickle Cell Anemia Board and POWER Board. She volunteers her time and makes contributions to several organizations including Myriam's Women Shelter, Lydia's Place and Women Inc. of Southwestern PA, and also finds time to speak at local schools and churches; and,
WHEREAS, Ms. Waters was most recently the solo anchor for the 6-8 a.m. Saturday morning program and has recently retired from broadcasting May 29, 2020; and,
