WHEREAS, Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week was started in 1993 by the National Association of Graduate-Professional Students as a way to support and appreciate graduate students; and
WHEREAS, Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week is designed to raise awareness of the impact graduate and professional students have within this nation’s colleges and universities; and
WHEREAS, there are more than 20,000 graduate and professional students from around the world currently studying in Pittsburgh; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh’s graduate and professional students have dedicated volunteer hours to hundreds of worthy causes, enriched the City’s arts scene both as creators and spectators, integrated into the community and become a vital part of the vibrant Pittsburgh experience; and
WHEREAS, Pittsburgh’s graduate and professional students have contributed to the economy and society through innovative public impact research, and by strengthening local business; and
WHEREAS, graduate and professional students are the future teaching professionals, researchers, medical professionals, and leaders of the political, business, cultural, non-profit and educational institutions that are so important to the City of Pittsburgh, the nation, and the world; and
WHEREAS, Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week gives universities throughout the city and the country the opportunity to celebrate the achievements of these students with seminars and other events.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby honor the contributions and achievements of its graduate and professional students; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare April 6 through April 10, 2020 as “Graduate and Professional Student Appreciation Week” in the City of Pittsburgh.
