Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare February 11th to be "Dr. Carter G. Woodson Day" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Dr. Carter G. Woodson founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, now called the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH); and,

 

WHEREAS, under Dr. Woodson's pioneering leadership, the Association created research and publication outlets for Black scholars through the establishment of the Journal of Negro History in 1916 and Negro History Bulletin in 1937; and,

 

WHEREAS, in 1926, Dr. Woodson initiated the celebration of Negro History Week to correspond with the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham Lincoln, which was later expanded to include the entire month of February for people of all ethnic and social backgrounds to discuss the Black experience; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Branch of ASALH in Pittsburgh is working to preserve Dr. Woodson's legacy and the legacy of other African American advocates, including working with the Black Political Empowerment Project to present a program on "African Americans and the Vote" on February 15, 2020 at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh-Homewood Branch; and,

 

WHEREAS, the Council of the City of Pittsburgh wishes to honor the late Dr. Woodson and commend the Dr. Edna B. McKenzie Branch of ASALH for the work they have done to promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about Black life, history and culture to the global community, especially in the creation of Black History Month;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare February 11th to be “Dr. Carter G. Woodson Day” in the City of Pittsburgh.
