Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize the cultural and historical significance of the Lunar New Year, the Year of the Metal Rat, for the Asian American community in Squirrel Hill and beyond, expresses its deepest respect and congratulates the partners who organized Lunar New Year in Pittsburgh, wishing all a happy and prosperous New Year; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare January 25, 2020 to February 9, 2020, to be "LUNAR NEW YEAR" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, the Lunar New Year began in China more than 4, 000 years ago and is celebrated in Pittsburgh annually by tens of thousands of Asian Americans and non-Asian Americans with community activities, a traditional Chinese style banquet and cultural performances ;and,

WHEREAS, the 2020 Lunar New Year marks the arrival of the Year of the Rat and begins on January 25, 2020, or the first day of the new year according to the lunisolar calendar and extends until the full moon 15 days later ;and,

WHEREAS, the Lunar New Year is the largest global holiday predominately celebrated by Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese and other Asian communities in Pittsburgh and around the world including China, Korea, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Tiber, Macau, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore , Taiwan, Thailand, Bhutan and Mongolia ; and,

WHEREAS, in Pittsburgh,, the 2020 Lunar New Year of the Metal Rat Celebration is sponsored and produced by many partners including the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA-Pittsburgh), St. Edmund's Academy, the Squirrel Hill Urban Coalition, Tzu Chi Academy of Pittsburgh, Children's Museum and the Pittsburgh Chinese Restaurant Association (PCRA), with all working to promote civic goals, foster pride in the heritage and traditions and raise awareness by showcasing culinary and cultural events at St. Edmund's Academy, the Children's Museum and culminating with a parade through Squirrel Hill.
