Title: NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby recognize and commend Christian Polk for mobilizing so many different resources and people to meet the needs of food insecurity and literacy in Hazelwood and congratulates Christian on fulfilling the requirements for the rank of Eagle Scout; and, BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Council of the City of Pittsburgh does hereby declare Saturday, December 7, 2019, to be "CHRISTIAN POLK DAY" in the City of Pittsburgh.

WHEREAS, Christian Thomas Polk of Boy Scout Troop 238 at St Bernard’s Church in Mt. Lebanon, PA has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in scouting, on December 7, 2019; and,

 

WHEREAS, as a member of Boy Scout Troop 238, Christian has served as a Patrol Leader and Senior Patrol Leader; and,

 

WHEREAS, for his Eagle Scout Service Project, Christian collaborated with The Mission Continues, Hazelwood Service Platoon, to assess the scope of food insecurity in the city neighborhood of Hazelwood. Christian has a connection to Hazelwood because his grandmother grew up there and his father spent much of his childhood there, and the community has great personal meaning for him; and,

 

WHEREAS, having assessed the need for a food resource as well as a need for a literacy component, Christian created three boxes to provide food for anyone who needed it as well as two boxes to be used as libraries for books for all ages to encourage people to read. These are two issues identified by Hazelwood stakeholders in design sessions with The Mission Continues. Sustainability of these boxes will be monitored and managed by Fish and Loaves Cooperative, the Hazelwood Initiative, Propel Schools and the staff of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Reading is Fundamental donated 100 new books to stock the Free Little Libraries and Girl Scout Troop #52908 and the United Hazelwood Design Team helped to create the boxes; and,
